How can I help as a volunteer?
We welcome volunteers in several capacities. We invite anyone to volunteer to run a team or committee, or be part of one, that handles a certain aspect of Adopt A House. Please contact us for available positions. Sign up for our mailing list HERE and choose "volunteer".

How can my family adopt a house that needs help?


Our signature program, we were on the ground in the days after the storm getting emergency supplies to houses in need. We are evolving as the needs change but we will continue to match houses in need with donors who want to help until the last house has been helped. Any donation made to a designated house will go directly to that house with NO RED TAPE.

You may also donate to our organization and then your donation will go towards us continuing to help others as well as fund current programs we are working on.

How can my office or workplace adopt a house that needs helps?

Read information above about our adoption program. Your group may join any house team as a team to help that house each their fundraising goal. OR, we can match you with one of our almost 500 homes who has opted to not have a page. You will be matched to a family in need based on both the level of the house's needs and your capabilities. Be sure to note how many employees are in your company that way we can find you an adequate match. Also feel free to contact us at 631-867-2401.

Who can adopt a house?
School Districts, PTA's, organizations of any type, youth groups, churches, social clubs, bowling leagues, networks of friends and families,alumni groups, school clubs- we don't put any contraints on who is allowed to adopt a home. We just ask that if you commit to a family that you are prepared to follow through with your commitment.
Can I fundraise money to go to the families and the organization?
The sky is the limit! We have groups using a gift registry for families to  help furnish their home and other needs. We also have groups who are collecting funds from every employee on fridays and after each month they will donate funds to family.  Some groups are donating five dollars for dress down days toward Sandy. Really anything goes. Collecting donations in the workplace, doing car washes, sell unneeded items on Craigslist and donate the funds, bake sales etc. Here are some suggestions:

YES! Our EIN# 46-1485424 You donations are tax-deductible.

I have other items, like furniture to donate. Where do I bring them?
Lindenhurst Exchange is a facebook site where members put on furniture they need as well as furniture offered to others. You may also post your offer on our facebook page too and see if someone in need will contact you to take them. You may also contact: Please send pictures and they will be emailed to all of our registered homes. The first home who responds will be given your contact information only.

How can I be part of Adopt  A House?
Get on our mailing list! We all welcome volunteers, donors, houses in need and anyone who want to keep up with what we are doing. Once you are on our mailing list, you can keep tabs on our projects and progress. Join our mailing list HERE and register as a "volunteer". If you are a house in need, please be sure to register HERE.  Even if you do not want to be included in our lottery or adoption program you must register. The information collected is used to establish data on houses in our area. Just note you do not want to be adopted. Houses in need receive different emails than volunteers.

Aside from the actual Adopt a House program, what are some other projects you are running?
Check out our list of past and upcoming events. We have run many workshops that help give out information about the different aspects of recovery for our registered families, and we continue to run them as needed. We have had several fundraising events, and are currently planning our 2nd Trees of Hope event to kick off our new spring programs.

I am a business owner. How can I help?
We would love to have you on board! If you believe you have services or resources you can offer, we would love to hear from you. We are open to all and any businesses stepping forward to spearhead an initiative, such as a gift event "a restaurant serving free meals for one particular night for folks south of Montauk" or fundraising events, such as - for every haircut or manicure, a part of the proceeds go to funding for the organization. The possibilities are endless, please contact us if you are a company looking to be a pillar of your community!

How do I register my house if I want help?
If you would like to be registered with Adopt a House, simply click HERE. Finally, if someone cannot fill out the form by themselves due to lack of internet service, they can call for help at 631-867-2401 we will have someone return your call and help fill out form over the phone.

Do you have any contractors you can recommend?
Unfortunately, we do not recommend any contractors. Due to the nature of our organization, we cannot endorse specific companies.  Angies List is a great resource for that. Also, check with the Better Business Bureau before hiring any company.

How can I get crisis counseling or support?
At a time of stress and loss, many people could use someone to talk to. Please contact us as we have a few therapists waiving their fees. Also, several hotlines are available including LifeNet 1-800-543-3638 and the Disaster Distress Hotline at1-800-985-5990. Project Hope also has group counseling available. ​Do you have sponsorship from companies and corporations?
We have several companies that are interested in adopting families, and some that already have. We are also reaching out to larger organizations and corporations to gage their interest in contributing via their Corporate Giving programs. As time goes on, we will amass a larger base of companies and corporations that are willing to donate not only funds but also needed items.

What if I don't hear back right away?
Please be patient and understand that we are all unpaid volunteers working around the clock to being everyone everything they need. We will be in touch as soon as possible. Your House will be match do specific donors from your information you submitted.  We will contact you when we have an appropriate match.
